Case Study | Medical Device Sector

Overview

Our client asked us to engage with them to see how we might improve the working conditions of their operators.

Operators had no flexibility in setting the height of their workstations and there were as a result experiencing ergonomic stresses and strains. In addition, inventory was building up and there were no defined locations for same.

Client

Our Role

Collaboration to design a height adjustable work station that would be flexible to suit all operators whilst at the same time offering a defined location for the storage of tools and product.

The Challenges

Our client wanted to create optimum working conditions for all operators.  Safety and ergonomics were two important parameters. Furthermore there was a desire to create defined locations for both tools and product to improve time optimisation by removing unnecessary searching for parts.

Our client asked us to review their current processes and devise a solution that would help ensure better and more efficient assembly of  product whilst at the same time improving safety and ergonomics.

The Solution

Our initial approach was to visit the client’s site to observe their current process.

The solution consisted of building height-adjustable work stations with both sit and stand options for operators thus improving productivity and well being. A storage llinbin was added to the front of each work station to allow for less time being spent looking for parts. A defiined location for the storage of reels at the side of the work station reduced non-value add time being taken in the assembly process.

The Outcome

The outcome for our client was as follows:

  • Ergonomic improvements in well-being and increased productivity.
  • Sit and stand options to suit operator heights (no one fit).
  • Defined locations for parts thus reducing time previously spent searching for parts.
  • Visiblity of process.
